there is other way to start… making foundation chain from single crochet or half double crochet or double crochet or even treble crochet…

FOUNDATION CHAIN FROM A DOUBLE CROCHET

first make a slip knot on the hook

chain two

find the third (last) loop from the hook

insert the hook into the last loop from the hook (as shown on the picture)

and work double crochet

…when you made your first double crochet find the bottom loop on it

insert the hook into the bottom loop

and work double crochet chain as long as you need it
